The headlines read “Buy Viagra” and “Buy now” in mindgra-bashing parodies. One of the more compelling points of late was the launch of a generic version of Viagra (sildenafil citrate) by Teva Pharmaceuticals (now Pfizer) in the UK in 2013. Teva’s patent (the biggest piece of confusion of their own had already been unveiled) for sildenafil citrate, which started with a bang in the UK in 2012, granted protection for a six-year period. This triggered a massive surge in demand, and Teva had to panic shop to compete. The UK launch was not something Teva wanted to be focused on, and it certainly did not look like it was going to be something that was really important to Pfizer. However, Teva, which has been struggling to meet expectations in the UK for a while, could be making a significant difference. Sildenafil is an effective and fast-acting medication that treats erectile dysfunction (ED), making it one of the most common sexual problems in men. It works by relaxing muscles in the walls of blood vessels, which allows more blood to flow into the penis when a man is sexually excited. It is available in various strengths, including 25mg, 50mg, and 100mg, and comes in tablets, as well as an injection and buttocks. In the US, sildenafil is available as a generic drug, so the generic version is not necessary.
While the UK launch was disappointing for Pfizer, Teva was not. In a statement to The Sunday Times, Teva said: “Viagra Connect (sildenafil citrate) has been very successful for our customers and we look forward to today’s launch of our next-day service. We are extremely happy that Teva has launched this new generic product and look forward to working with our competitors to launch the next-day Viagra Connect (sildenafil citrate) in the UK.” Teva’s previous UK launch of sildenafil citrate was in 2013, which had been disappointing for our customers. In addition to this, Teva has also launched a new generic product called tadalafil (Cialis) – which is effective only when combined with a healthy diet and exercise – to address ED.
We are very much in the same league as most competition players – with Teva showing what it caneca should look at – and with their new product being available in a generic version, not only is it more affordable than the existing product, it is also easier to buy, making it a much cheaper alternative to the old product. At the same time, we believe that generic medication should be viewed as a separate entity, and that it should be allowed to continue to be a choice for many. If the launch of the new Viagra Connect (sildenafil citrate) does prove to be an emotional and fulfilling experience for our customers, we hope that the agreement that is signed will give Teva more time to improve.
The choice between buying Viagra Connect and buying now is an obvious one, given the size of the market for erectile dysfunction (ED) treatments in the UK. As many as one in five men suffer from ED, and over half of these men are over 40. The pharmacist, David Wood, is facing three counts each of dispensing sexual behaviour in the past six months.
The charge, which carries a maximum penalty of two years’ imprisonment, is the second verdict in a number of sexual behaviour cases against pharmacies in the UK. Last month a jury found the pharmacist and a pharmacist’s former boss, Brian Beattie, guilty of dispensing sexual behaviour in the past six months.
Wood, who was jailed for eight-and-a-half years for dispensing ‘vigorous sexual behaviour’, had a sentence of five years’ imprisonment in a trial in 2017. He was sentenced last month to six months’ imprisonment for the possession of a controlled substance, as well as two years’ imprisonment for dispensing sexual behaviour.
The charges were brought by a confidential court review team. The pharmacist had previously pleaded not guilty to one of the charges and was being held on a £25,000 special assessment.
Battie’s former boss, David Wood, has pleaded not guilty.
The trial began Monday in Manchester Crown Court.
